It was neither dark nor daylight but the weather was unforgiving as Geff steered his 18 wheeler through the mountain pass , even though he had all the lights burning and had driven this road hundreds of times over many years at the wheel Geff was finding this night extremely draining, he’d been driving for over 30 hours with only a couple of minor stops (bathroom and coffee breaks) but this delivery would bring him in 500 grand straight. He’d picked up the container the day before and told 500 grand if delivered in 48 hours, he’d already driven for 10 hours before taking the job and should probably refused but 500 G’s would allow him to retire back to California where his daughter lived with his 3 month old grand daughter, this was for them. The only other stipulations was don’t ask questions, don’t check cargo and stay off the radar ie do not stop for cops. At that last he’d really considered turning the job down, but an image of his Daughter and granddaughter flashed in his mind and he’d said yes.
The wind was picking up and it had started to rain with occasional hail visibility had dropped still Geff drove on , the job no longer forefront of his mind he just wanted to survive this night, lightning lit the sky thunder roared.
Then it happened lightning hit a tree shattering it, first he felt a tyre blow then something slammed the front of the truck , and to top it off a massive branch crashed through the windscreen and stopped in Geff’s stomach, he blacked out as his truck slide off road into the gully.
His eyes flicked open , he felt numb. The truck was now wedged against trees steam pouring from the busted radiator the weather coming in through the broken windscreen, Geff groaned and just before blacking out again everything seemed to glow pink, angle? He blacked out.
With two hours to spare Geff and his truck rolled into the yard to be met by several black Raindrovers and another truck. Uploaded Geff was handed a large briefcase and consequently ignored.
3 days later, Geff found himself in a plush armchair making silly faces at his granddaughter while his daughter waited for the kettle to boil, she leant back against counter and smiled at the heavenly image before her, Geff looked over and smiled back at his beloved
daughter.
A mother kneels at a grave stone, dry tears on her cheeks, a baby girl on her lap.
“ oh dad, this is Gracey, named after mum.. you would have loved her”
